PERSONALITY

It's very easy to dismiss Milly Ashford as a side character without a personality unless it pertains to Lelouch. While most things surrounding him MUST be plot relevant, Milly is not one of them. She is a creature of mystery that stands on her own, independent of him, and just about everyone else.
This is not to say that her relationship with Lelouch is to be taken lightly. They met when she was eleven, and she fell in love with him that very same day. Their first meeting was rocky, and showcased traits that carried all the way to adulthood. An eagerness to help. The patience of a saint. A genuinely caring heart. A playful attitude. Their relationship has evolved and become a balance of power, with her seeing plans on the whole and focusing on the big picture, and him dealing with the details and essentially micromanaging. Together, they are the President and Vice President of Ashford Academy's student council.
Ashford Academy serves as an important backdrop in the series, and Milly is as much a part of that school as it is a part of her. She invests her heart and soul into making her and everyone else's school days memorable, planning events like the Culture Festival, Swimsuit Day, the Absolute Silence Party, and the Crossdresser's Ball. She says it herself: people need festivals now and again. She believes there is a time and place for both seriousness, and truly enjoying oneself. And this enjoyment is all she ever wants-- to make people smile and have good memories, even in bad times.
Her school and her attachment to people, though, may hold her back. While Milly is exceptionally friendly and seems very eager to take on the world, she "uses Ashford as a shield [to hide from the real world]", as her friend/council member Nina said. Eventually, she does move forward with her life and becomes a journalist, but it takes time and leaving behind a very important part of her for her to do so. Beyond that, she had to be willing to sacrifice a huge part of her heart for her friends to be happy, and for her to grow into a different happiness.
There is a sadness to Milly that she tries to hide under festivals and a go-get-'em attitude, and it appears in the strangest places. She knows many secrets, and while she does like having more, she never gives away the ones she has already. It may be exasperating to deal with her, and her nosiness, but one can rest assured in knowing the information will stay with her. It's that kind of loyalty and secrecy that means she'd give her chance at true love away to help her family and still keep her friends safe. Her parents arranged a marriage between her and an earl she stays in through most of the series, calling off their engagement when she graduates and goes forth into the world, becoming her own woman that isn't interested in being used as someone's pawn, no matter how much she loves those that use her.
While relations with her own family are tense and rather strained, she has a very "ride together, die together" attitude when it comes to her friends, knowing things about them that others would shun them for, but once part of her inner circle, always part of her inner circle. Many don't know her secrets; all they know is what she's willing to share, but this doesn't mean that they are any less of her friends. She's not a saint by any means: she is still loud, a bit too enthusiastic about skinship, living in the past, and a bit impulsive. But she does mean well, and takes care of the family she's created until she cannot any longer.
In all her ideas and games, and everything else she does in life, Milly is absolutely the reason the saying "go big or go home" exists. She knows how to lead her troops into battle, as it were, and when she has an idea, she dares to see it through. She's an excellent orchestrator considering that she's an ordinary teenage girl. While she can't compete with the likes of Lelouch, she is still an absolutely worthy opponent. Everything she does is extravagant, and she herself is exceptionally bold. She's unafraid of opulence, and making everything a party. She's a festival on the go, bringing joy to so many people with a great smile and a bit of sex appeal. One would think she'd embody the dumb blonde trope to a tee, as she is beautiful, blonde, and busty... but with noble heritage, a best friend who is a genius, and her own ingenuity and creativity, she's a force to be reckoned with. While she has fallen, and seen so much pain, she still dreams of bigger and better things. She pushes herself to be magnificent and to share that grandeur with others. Everything about her is larger than life, and yet, she is always in someone else's shadows. she doesn't mind, though. They can have their moments now. It's not like she'll never have another chance to shine. If anyone can make something out of nothing, it's Milly Ashford.
Throughout the series, Milly grows from a carefree, fun-loving schoolgirl to a woman who knows her position in a war, and has lost so many people that mattered to her, but never quite losing her sparkle. Even through such a tumultuous period, she is true to herself, and who she wants to be, remaining the picture of grace and elegance, as well as the poster child for party girls. All these traits come together to create a true lady, one with an independent nature, a kind heart, and a wild spirit.

HISTORY

Milly led a very interesting life in an interesting world, and made sure her time as student council president at Ashford Academy was exciting at every turn.

LAGUNBIRU CRAU

Lagunbiru was a pleasure cruise of a spaceship, with the main form of earning money and status was by completing a kink bingo card. Upon arriving on the ship, Milly threw herself into the lifestyle, and made sure that her credits never went to sending herself home. Anything she could do to stay aboard the ship, she would do. She spent frivolously, gave generously, and never considered setting aside enough for a ticket home.
In fact, at one point she left the spaceship, but instead of travelling far away to Britannia or to another friend’s homeworld, she chose to start a life on Haen, the planet that Lagunbiru was docked off of. The planet was a different life from the station, full of children and the possibility of real work, but she stayed, wanting nothing more to create a life that would be difficult to leave, or to be dragged away from…
Eventually, she returned to the station, bringing the experiences of Haen to her friends on the station, telling them of a bright and colourful world that seemed so much kinder and loving than the one they were living aboard the ship. Still, how could she complain? People she had grown to love were still there, the ship and all its offerings were tantalising and luxurious beyond compare, and it was exactly where she wanted to be.
Through Lagunbiru, she became more sexually adventurous; she was willing to try anything once before, but with the technology offered aboard the ship, and how easily reality could be altered, anything and everything became an interest. Dangerous acts became possible, and if it was to help another person check off a box, she wouldn’t hesitate to perform them. It also didn’t matter what kind of person asked her, which was true before she lived on the station, but was amplified once she adjusted to life there. In Britannia, her sexuality was something she had played around with, but she had never been so forward with it until Lagunbiru.
The station also gave her the opportunity to become an explorer, a planet-hopper. Before, her worldview was so small, constrained to the Britannian Empire and its dealings, whatever was fed to her through textbooks and news programs. By being on Lagunbiru, she met others from all sorts of worlds, learned about alternate, concurrent realities, discovered how vast space and time and the universe itself could be, all while being so small. She also became a planet hopper, leaving her Earth to live among the stars and to take up residence on Haen. The idea of going past the moon was unheard of in her world-- she never would have imagined that she would sail far beyond it, and onto new worlds. Once an explorer, always an explorer, so Prismatica will be a welcome change, and a new world to partake in.
PRISMATICA CRAU

After being brought to the planet Prismatica, Milly had the opportunity to focus less on making money and helping others get home, and instead devote more of attention to herself and her wants. This is not to say that she became selfish, but more that she was able to take care of herself better, and resolve issues she had been carrying for years. However, they were not handled as well as they could've been, due to some friends from her homeworld showing up.
Still, she made a name for herself as someone the Moonblessed could turn to in times of need, as she was much more open with intimacy and Moonlacing due to her time on Lagunbiru. Physical affection and intimacy doesn't scare her, but emotional vulnerability? A work in progress. Milly is growing up, growing older, realising what it means to be an adult and how to be the person she's always wanted to be. Prismatica was a literal transformative experience for her, and under the moons, she was able to unlock new aspects of her personality, learning how to use her strengths to their fullest, and forgiving herself for her weaknesses.
After having been on two separate planets, Milly is now far more curious about the worlds beyond her own, and seeks out as much knowledge as possible. She wants answers to life's mysteries, and the ones she's been thrown into, and she will pursue is for as long as she can. Erku is just another mystery to be solved, one she will take in stride.
